Aphelion

Okay...so this is the next big thing being developed over by the Rakuhana crew. Alex and Zenpher have put together a browser based MMO concept and have been developing at a very rapid pace over the past 3 weeks.

Remember - this is 3 weeks worth of work in their spare time - took Vult-R roughly 3 years to get here.

Anyways - yes - they're using the EO sprite base but that's not going to be the end result - it's simply a matter of convenience as they work on proof of concept - they will bring on a pixel artist if it turns into a viable option for them.

What makes this exciting for me is a few things:

1. HTML5. This means that the game has the potential to be VERY cross platform. It already runs on Macs and PCs (optimum on Chrome right now). But think about it running on Ice Cream Sandwich Droid or iPad. I'm pushing them to ensure compatibility because I want to play on my tablet.

2. The developers. These aren't the hackers. They aren't the scammers. They aren't Sausage. They're motivated coders who actually do good work. And creating their own server code and their own client in 3 weeks is damned impressive.

3. The Old Guard - what's left of the real EO community hangs out at Rakuhana. Of all the EO related projects on the go - this is the one that has the potential to connect - especially for we who have no desire to play a bug and backdoor infested EOserv clone.

Anyways - check it out. It's way pre-alpha at this point but it's worth the look see.

The Future of the Internet

Imagine walking down the street, wearing the latest in designer sunglasses: net enabled.

Relevant data being projected real time to the peripheries of your vision. Time, date, temperature, distance to your destination. It's a place you haven't been before so a thin green line marks the sidewalk in front of you giving you the optimum path for efficient travel.

A car drives past. Red, sporty, just what you're looking for. A quick search gives you the vital stats, a 3d model that you can manipulate, change the colour, add options and an advertisement for the closest dealer who has it in stock. File that away in your contacts list for later.

You stop to smell the roses and notice that they're would be perfect for the wedding. You take a quick picture with the built in camera on your glasses. Shared with your friends. Quite a few likes - you send the picture to the florist.

Then the attack comes unexpected. Zombies. The immersive MMORPG you've been playing has flagged this section of your neighbourhood as a contaminated zone. The AI interacts with the real world environment - digital zombies superimposed on the street in front of you. A few are run over by passing traffic. But there are still a half dozen left. That's not going to keep you from your hair appointment. You duck into an alley as the GPS recalculates your route. The zombies are just around the corner but you've created a perfect field of fire for that Uzi you picked up on the way home from the dentist yesterday.

Six wasted undead later and you're back on your way to the salon. A green exclamation point on the door tells you this is your destination. Walking inside you transfer another 3d model of the hairstyle you're looking for to the receptionists tablet. One haircut later and the funds are instantly transferred from your account.

As you go to leave you notice another player across the street. His power is OVER 9000. You look around. Fortunately this hair salon also carries virtual rocket launchers...

This is the future of the internet.

Why u no play EO?

I get asked this a billion times. I don't play for a number of reasons:

1. When I started playing EO computers were still pretty shitty and the internet was slow. Now I own a beast and have a fibre optic internet connection. 2d isomorph was cool but as for games I can play so much better.

2. F2P gaming has gone corporate. It used to be that playing for free was just an indie thing. You could get in at the development level and play without cost. Today the corporations are giving better content for free. DDO, LOTRO, WoW (for 20 levels), BOI and a whole host of other companies offer a better range of choices than EO.

3. Botters. There's no point to playing EO now. Everything is about the sellers. If you want to play you really have to pay and then look at the shit you're paying for.

4. No development. There's no point in continuing to play EO if this is all it's going to be. The appeal was the anticipation of what was coming next. There's no next. EO has no future.

5. No community. Not the one I played with anyways. Polish botters are not my idea of good company and everyone who matters to me is on Rakuhana (with a couple of exceptions who still pop by the blog from time to time).

6. Did I mention no development? There's a sadness to Endless-Online because of the wasted opportunity. Imagine it ported to the iPad or to Android or to Flash. EO on a 7 or 10 inch screen right now at 99 cents a pop with advertising revenue and an advancement shop. Vult-R could be sipping Margaritas in Mexico right now with a company like Zynga gently massaging his prostate. Money's still there to be made for one of you private server folks. 2d iso isn't exciting on the 27 inch screen but scale it down for handheld and you could still kill in the market.

That's pretty much it. EO was great back in the day - but seriously - why wouldn't I move on?
